More information
An exceptional Macassar ebony sideboard on an oak frame, decorated with embossed and polychrome leather featuring stylized floral motifs. The projecting central section opens with two doors, while the curved side sections each open with a door. Beautiful gilt bronze mounts adorn the frieze. The top is of Sainte Anne gray marble. The piece rests on six fluted, oval feet with a black patina. Clément Mère (1861-1940) was from Bayonne, where he studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he joined the La Maison Moderne gallery in 1900, and then met Franz Waldraff, with whom he established his workshop in 1902. Clément Mère's furniture designs were limited, reserved for the diplomatic corps, national museums, and the upper middle class (Rothschild and Frisch de Fels)
