More information
A rare lady's writing desk, known as a "billet doux" desk, crafted from solid molded, carved, and inlaid walnut on all sides. The upper section features a niche with an entablature and a background inlaid with butterflies. The compartment opens with a drop-front decorated with a squirrel perched on a branch, revealing a compartmentalized interior with a pen holder. The sides are decorated with a floral landscape. It rests on molded and cabriole legs. The front features two detached columns, carved with inverted twists, and a stretcher with scalloped moldings. Original gilt bronze keys, hot-stamped maker's mark on the drop-front, and embossed leather writing surface. Exceptional quality of cabinetmaking and a superb patina!
